Speedometer Privacy Policy
Effective date: October 12, 2026
Thank you for using Speedometer. We take your privacy seriously. This policy explains how the app handles information related to you.
Please read this policy before using the app. By using the app, you acknowledge that you have read and understood it.
In short
- Location (GPS) is used to measure your speed only while the app is open, never in the background
- Your location and route are never stored; only trip totals (distance, time, speed) are saved on your device
- The app has no internet permission; no account or sign-in is required, and nothing is uploaded
- No data is shared with third parties or used for advertising
- No advertising, analytics or crash-reporting SDKs
1. Information we process
While the app is open, Speedometer uses your phone's GPS to read your current speed, position, accuracy, heading and satellite count. They are used to show your speed, check it against your speed limit, and calculate the distance, moving time, average speed and top speed of the current trip.
Your position is kept in memory only to work out the distance between two consecutive fixes, then discarded. It is never written to storage, and no route is recorded. Location stops when the app goes to the background or the screen is locked.
The only data saved on your device is: the start and end time, distance, moving time and top speed of each trip you end; the totals of the current trip; and your settings (speed unit, dial style, speed limit, alert options, HUD options and so on). This data is stored only in the app's private storage, and we have no access to it.
We do not collect any personally identifiable information, nor do we collect device identifiers or contacts. The app has no account system and does not request the internet permission, so it is technically unable to send any data to our servers.
2. How data is stored and deleted
Trip records do not expire. You can view them in Trip history and delete them one by one.
You can save your trips as a CSV file in Settings → Export trips (CSV). The file is saved to a location you choose, and what you do with it is up to you.
Uninstalling the app or clearing its data in system settings deletes all trip records and settings.
Trip records and settings are included in the Android system backup to your own Google account, so they can be restored on a new phone or after reinstalling (depending on your backup settings). This is an Android system feature; we have no access to those backups.
3. Permissions
Precise and approximate location: used to measure your speed with GPS while the app is open. Measuring speed requires precise location; with approximate location only, or without location, speed cannot be measured, but you can still view your trips and change settings. The app does not request background location.
Vibration: used to vibrate when you go over your speed limit. You can turn it off in Settings.
The app does not request internet, background location, camera, microphone, storage, contacts or notification permissions.
4. Safety
GPS speed may differ slightly from your vehicle's speedometer, and the signal depends on your surroundings, so it is for reference only. Always obey traffic laws, keep your eyes on the road and do not operate your phone while driving.
5. Third-party services
The app does not include any advertising, analytics or crash-reporting SDKs. It uses the phone's own GPS directly, not a third-party location service.
The app is distributed through Google Play. Depending on your device settings, Google may collect diagnostic information such as installs and crashes, which is governed by the Google Privacy Policy (https://policies.google.com/privacy).
6. Children's privacy
The app is not directed at children under 13, and it does not collect personal information from any user, including children.
7. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy when the app, the law or our operations change. The updated policy will be published on this page with a new effective date. If a new version materially changes how data is handled, we will notify you prominently in the app.
