Diary Privacy Policy
Effective date: October 12, 2026
Thank you for using Diary. A diary is deeply personal, and we take your privacy seriously. This policy explains how the app handles information related to you.
Please read this policy before using the app. By using the app, you acknowledge that you have read and understood it.
In short
- Your entries, moods and photos are stored only on your phone
- The app has no internet permission; no account or sign-in is required, nothing is uploaded, and we cannot see your diary
- You pick each photo in the system photo picker; the app does not read your photo library
- Your passcode is stored only as a salted hash; fingerprint and face are checked by the system, and the app never receives biometric data
- No data is shared with third parties; no advertising, analytics or crash-reporting SDKs
1. Information we process
Your entries: the title, text and mood you write, and the date and time of each entry.
Photos: the photos you select in the system photo picker are copied (scaled down to 2048 pixels on the long side, plus a thumbnail) into the app's private storage so they can be shown in your entries. The app can only access the photos you select, not the rest of your library. Metadata such as the location where a photo was taken is not kept in the copy.
App lock: if you turn on the app lock, your passcode and the recovery code are saved only as salted hashes and checked on your device; the passcode cannot be recovered from the hash. Fingerprint or face unlock is handled by Android; the app only receives whether the check succeeded.
Settings: text size, the daily reminder time, app lock options, the app language and so on.
All of this is stored only in the app's private storage. The app has no account system and does not request the internet permission, so it is technically unable to send any data to our servers, and we cannot see your diary. We do not collect any personally identifiable information, nor do we collect device identifiers, contacts or location.
2. How data is stored and deleted
Entries and photos do not expire. You can edit or delete them at any time. A deleted entry can be restored right away with Undo; after that, photo files that are no longer used are cleaned up automatically.
In Settings → Export backup you can save all entries and photos to a ZIP file, and in Export as text you can save them as a plain text file. The file is saved to a location you choose, and how you keep or share it is up to you. Backup files are not encrypted, so keep them safe. Importing a backup merges entries and never deletes the ones already on your phone.
You can also share a single entry as text to an app you choose.
Uninstalling the app or clearing its data in system settings deletes all entries, photos and settings permanently. Please export a backup now and then.
Entries and settings are included in the Android system backup to your own Google account (to keep it small, the cloud backup does not include photos; a direct device-to-device transfer does). Your passcode and app lock settings are never backed up. This is an Android system feature that depends on your backup settings; we have no access to those backups.
3. Permissions
Notifications: used for the daily writing reminder (requested on Android 13 and later when you turn the reminder on). The reminder is off by default and can be turned off at any time in Settings.
Run at startup: used to schedule the daily reminder again after the phone restarts, the app is updated, or the time or time zone changes. It has an effect only when the daily reminder is on.
Biometrics: used, when you turn on fingerprint or face unlock, to let the system check your fingerprint or face.
The app does not request internet, photo library (storage), camera, microphone, location, contacts or exact alarm permissions.
4. Security
The app lock keeps other people from opening the app on your phone. Your entries are not additionally encrypted; they are protected by Android's private app storage. If you forget your passcode, you can set a new one with the recovery code shown when you set the passcode. The recovery code is shown only once, so write it down and keep it safe. If both the passcode and the recovery code are lost, we cannot open the diary for you either.
With Block screenshots turned on, the app cannot be captured in screenshots or screen recordings, and its content is hidden in recent apps.
5. Third-party services
The app does not include any advertising, analytics or crash-reporting SDKs. It uses Android's own photo picker to choose photos and Android's biometric service for fingerprint and face unlock.
The app is distributed through Google Play. Depending on your device settings, Google may collect diagnostic information such as installs and crashes, which is governed by the Google Privacy Policy (https://policies.google.com/privacy).
6. Children's privacy
The app is not directed at children under 13, and it does not collect personal information from any user, including children.
7. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy when the app, the law or our operations change. The updated policy will be published on this page with a new effective date. If a new version materially changes how data is handled, we will notify you prominently in the app.
